Pacing

Stimulation of the heart by small electrical impulses to treat slow heart rates (bradycardia).

PAC

premature atrial contraction, a heart beat which has originated early in the upper chambers of the heart (atria). It is usually generated from a source outside the SA node (ectopic focus).

PARAD / PARAD+ function

P And R-based Arrhythmia Detection feature available in all Sorin Group’s implantable defibrillators aimed at better differentiating ventricular from atrial tachyarrhythmias.

Peak Endocardial Acceleration (PEA)

This sensor is available in the NewLivingTM CHF cardiac resynchronization system; it picks-up vibrations originating in the heart when it contracts, and is used to deliver optimal CRT.

Prevalence

Proportion of people in the entire population who are found to have a disease at a certain point in time without regard to when they first got the disease.

Programmer

Equipment kept in your doctor's office that communicates with your ICD when you come for a checkup. The programmer reads information stored in the ICD's memory. It reports the status of the battery and leads, the rhythms and rates of your heart since your last visit, and any therapies your ICD has given. The programmer can then be used to program your ICD, setting the therapies that your doctor has selected for the treatment of slow and fast heart rates.

Pulse

a rhythm in the arteries caused by the contractions of the heart.

Pulse generator

The main part of a pacemaker and ICD. It is the sealed unit containing the battery, microprocessor (minicomputer), and electronic components. When a pacemaker or ICD's battery is running down, the entire pulse generator is replaced.

PVC

premature ventricular contraction. Similar to PAC but occurring within the lower chambers of the heart.
